1Th 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Heb 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, (body) and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Gen 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
The LORD Jesus Christ’s body, soul, and spirit.
Luk 23:42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.
Luk 23:43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise. (Where Jesus soul went for 3 days and 3 nights)
Luk 23:44 And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.
Luk 23:45 And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.
Luk 23:46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.
Luk 23:52 This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.
Luk 23:53 And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid.
Luk 23:54 And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on.
Luk 23:55 And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.
Rich Man & Lazarus
Luk 16:19 There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:
Luk 16:20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,
Luk 16:21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.
Luk 16:22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; (body)
- His soul had eyes and felt torment.
Luk 16:23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
- His soul could cry and speak. And their souls had fingers and tongues.
Luk 16:24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
Luk 16:25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.
Luk 16:26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
Luk 16:27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house:
- His soul had a burden.
Luk 16:28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
Now let’s look at all three parts and examine them.
THE BODY
Most men are only concerned with the BODY. The rich man was clothed in fine linen and fared sumptuously everyday.
Jezebel didn’t care about her heart but she “painted her face” and “tired her head” (2 Kings 9:30)
This body is weak. (Mark 14:38). You need to get saved and quit relying on your body to make it.
A common saying I hear at work concerning a bad worker is “he’s a body”. But he may have a bad spirit and seem like he has no soul.
The moment you get saved, as far as God is concerned, your flesh is crucified with Jesus Christ.
Gal 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
Rom 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
Everyday that you wake up, you’re walking around in something that God considers dead. So every day you must remember it is dead.
Rom 6:11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
1Co 15:31 I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily.
1Co 6:18 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.
1Co 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
1Co 6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.
What happens with you and your body at death? If your saved you will be absent from the body and present with the LORD.
2Co 5:8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.
And you’re waiting on a NEW BODY because your current body isn’t saved , even though your soul is saved.
Rom 8:23 And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.
After you get a glorified body you will be judged for your service at the Judgment Seat Of Christ.
2Co 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.
So the things you do in this body aren’t about salvation, they are about rewards and loss of rewards.
Don’t be all about your present body, let your adorning (ornamenting, decorating) be the inner man.
1Pe 3:3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;
1Pe 3:4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
THE SOUL (looks like the body)
Gen 35:18 And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Benoni: but his father called him Benjamin.
Rev 6:9 And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:
Rev 6:10 And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?
Rev 6:11 And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.
Mrk 8:36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
Mrk 8:37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
If you have sold your soul, you can get it bought back by the LORD.
When a lost man’s soul dies, it faces the “second death”.
Rev 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
So is it well with your soul? Do you know that you are going to be with the LORD when your soul departs?
When a man gets saved, the LORD performs an operation where he cuts your soul loose from your flesh. Only then is it well with your soul.
Col 2:11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:
Col 2:12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
Col 2:13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
Remember how your body is now dead if your saved? Since it is dead, the Spirit of God baptized you into another body, the body of Christ.
Eph 5:30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
And it is “sitting in heavenly places in Christ Jesus”. (Ephesians 2:6). The soul is “sealed unto the day of redemption”. (Ephesians 4:30) So therefore it can’t be joined back with the flesh.
Once you’re saved, the devil can never touch your soul. He can only get possession of your body.
1Co 5:5 To deliver such a one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
In the Old Testament, since a saints soul was still stuck to his flesh, the deeds of the flesh could even destroy the soul.
Pro 6:32 But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.
THE SPIRIT (like air or wind) (“breathed into
his nostrils the breathe of life”)
For example when your spirit gets broken, it knocks the wind out of your sails” as they say.
Not sure how it looks but we see the Holy Ghost ascended in a “bodily shape”.
Luk 3:22 And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.
The spirit is like a candle lit by the LORD.
Pro 20:27 The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.
Jhn 1:9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
Pro 24:20 For there shall be no reward to the evil man; the candle of the wicked shall be put out.
Job 18:5 Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine.
Job 18:6 The light shall be dark in his tabernacle, and his candle shall be put out with him.
Job 21:17 How oft is the candle of the wicked put out! and how oft cometh their destruction upon them! God distributeth sorrows in his anger.
A common saying is “he blew his candle out”, you know, when someone is trying to break your spirits.
A great example of what the spirit is can be found in Ezekiel 37.
Ezk 37:1 The hand of the LORD was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the LORD, and set me down in the midst of the valley which was full of bones,
Ezk 37:2 And caused me to pass by them round about: and, behold, there were very many in the open valley; and, lo, they were very dry.
Ezk 37:3 And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord GOD, thou knowest.
Ezk 37:4 Again he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the LORD.
Ezk 37:5 Thus saith the Lord GOD unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live:
Ezk 37:6 And I will lay sinews upon you, and will bring up flesh upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and ye shall live; and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
Ezk 37:7 So I prophesied as I was commanded: and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to his bone.
Ezk 37:8 And when I beheld, lo, the sinews and the flesh came up upon them, and the skin covered them above: but there was no breath in them.
Ezk 37:9 Then said he unto me, Prophesy unto the wind, prophesy, son of man, and say to the wind, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.
Ezk 37:10 So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood up upon their feet, an exceeding great army
Paul shows you when a person dies spiritually is when he realizes he has broken God’s law and is a sinner.
Rom 7:7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
Rom 7:8 But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.
Rom 7:9 For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.
Once you reach the age of accountability you are SPIRITUALLY DEAD
Eph 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
A lost person must be BORN AGAIN to be made alive again.
You can see a physical birth but not a spiritual one.
Jhn 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Jhn 3:7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
Jhn 3:8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
When you get born again, your spirit is joined to the LORD’s.
1Co 6:16 What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh.
1Co 6:17 But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.
Luk 9:60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.
The Spirit is QUICKENED
Quickened means to be made a live. For example “quick and the dead”. (1 Peter 4:5)
The “quick of the nail”, which is the living flesh under the nail.
Quicksand (which moves), quicklime (bubbles) , quicksilver (runs around like it’s alive)
“The quickening” is when you first start to feel the baby alive.
Eph 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
Eph 2:5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
Eph 2:6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
The spirit goes back to God at death.
Ecc 12:7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.
This is why he only mentions the body and soul
Being destroyed in hell.
Mat 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
The way a persons body will be destroyed in hell is by it being cast bodily into the lake of fire. Like in Revelation 19:20 when the Antichrist and false prophet are “cast alive into a lake of fire”.
Your spirit has been made alive. It is what is allowing you to have fellowship with God down here. When you live for the flesh down here, it doesn’t affect your soul, but it seems it can still make your spirit dirty.
2Co 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
