Author – Joshua & Samuel
24 Chapters, 658 verses, 18858 words
1451 BC to 1427 BC
Historically this book shows us what happens when Israel Crosses Jordan and They go in to receive the promised land.
Doctrinally it shows us Joshua as a picture of Jesus Christ at the 2nd coming. You’ll notice the battles remind you of when Jesus Christ comes back for war. For example multiple kings gather against Joshua.
Practically for us this book shows us the warfare of the believer. The enemies defeated by Israel picture the obstacles to you having victorious Christian life. Moses pictures the law that could only show you your sinful state. Joshua pictures Jesus Christ who takes you beyond that.
In chapters 1-5 you have israel going into the land
In chapters 6-12 you have the battles listed for keeping the land.
Chapters 13-24 are primarily about the colonization of the land.
Jesus is pictured as “the captain of our salvation.”
Chapter 1
Moses represents the law. Joshua represents Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ takes you further than the law!
Joh 1:17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
Jos 1:1 Now after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD it came to pass, that the LORD spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ minister, saying,
Jos 1:2 Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel.
The law shows you that your a sinner but it’s Jesus Christ that leads you into the promised land and makes it possible for you to have a victorious Christian life.
Chapter 2
Rahab The Harlot and the scarlet thread.
(This pictures the blood of Jesus Christ)
Jos 2:18 Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father’s household, home unto thee.
Jos 2:19 And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall beupon his head, and we will be guiltless: and whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him.
If you have the blood(like the scarlet thread) on your record than you are delivered from the wrath to come.
Chapter 3
Israel Crosses The Jordan On Dry Ground. (A huge miracle)
Jesus Also Gave You A Place To Stand.
1Co 15:1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
Jos 3:15 And as they that bare the ark were come unto Jordan, and the feet of the priests that bare the ark were dipped in the brim of the water, (for Jordan overfloweth all his banks all the time of harvest,)
Jos 3:16 That the waters which came down from above stood and rose up upon an heap very far from the city Adam, that is beside Zaretan: and those that came down toward the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, failed, andwere cut off: and the people passed over right against Jericho.
Jos 3:17 And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan.
Chapter 4
Memorial Stones
Leave Something Behind For Your Kids To Show Them What Jesus Did For You.
Jos 4:4 Then Joshua called the twelve men, whom he had prepared of the children of Israel, out of every tribe a man:
Jos 4:5 And Joshua said unto them, Pass over before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of Jordan, and take ye up every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the children of Israel:
Jos 4:6 That this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean ye by these stones?
Jos 4:7 Then ye shall answer them, That the waters of Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it passed over Jordan, the waters of Jordan were cut off: and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever.
Chapter 5
2nd Generation Is Circumcised because they didn’t get circumcised with the first generation.
Jos 5:2 At that time the LORD said unto Joshua, Make thee sharp knives, and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time.
Jos 5:3 And Joshua made him sharp knives, and circumcised the children of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.
Jos 5:4 And this is the cause why Joshua did circumcise: All the people that came out of Egypt, that were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came out of Egypt.
Jos 5:5 Now all the people that came out were circumcised: but all the people that were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth out of Egypt, them they had not circumcised.
This is a picture of both circumcisions. The second one is better. The 2nd one is when Jesus Christ Gave You The Spiritual Circumcision
Col 2:11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:
When You got saved the Lord CUT your soul loose from your flesh. For this reason you can’t lose your salvation. Your sins in the flesh never touch the soul again.
CAPTAIN OF THE LORD’S HOSTS(a pre appearance of Jesus Christ as the Angel of the LORD)
Jos 5:13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries?
Jos 5:14 And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant? (NOTICE THAT JOSHUA WORSHIPPED HIM)
Jos 5:15 And the captain of the LORD’S host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.
Chapter 6
Battle Of Jericho & Rahab Spared
(JOSHUA KEEPS THE PROMISE JUST LIKE JESUS KEEPS HIS PROMISE)
Jos 6:12 And Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of the LORD.
Jos 6:22 But Joshua had said unto the two men that had spied out the country, Go into the harlot’s house, and bring out thence the woman, and all that she hath, as ye sware unto her.
Jesus will one day bring us out as he promised
Jos 6:23 And the young men that were spies went in, and brought out Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, and all that she had; and they brought out all her kindred, and left them without the camp of Israel.
Jos 6:24 And they burnt the city with fire, and all that was therein: only the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of brass and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the LORD.
Jos 6:25 And Joshua saved Rahab the harlot alive, and her father’s household, and all that she had; and she dwelleth in Israel even unto this day; because she hid the messengers, which Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.
Chapter 7
Israel Smitten By AI, Achan Sins.
The LORD revealed to Joshua that sin was going on.
Jesus Reveals Your Sins and brings them to your attention. Get rid of the sin and get victory.
Israel is defeated by AI because of sin in the camp. There are consequences for sin. Sin always hinders the victorious Christian life.
Jos 7:19 And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the LORD God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me.
Jos 7:20 And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:
Jos 7:21 When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.
This shows you the process of sin. You SEE SOMETHING you aren’t supposed to have, you COVET IT, and then you TAKE IT. Then a lot of people HIDE IT!
Jos 7:22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it.
Jos 7:23 And they took them out of the midst of the tent, and brought them unto Joshua, and unto all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the LORD.
Jos 7:24 And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them unto the valley of Achor.
Jos 7:25 And Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled us? the LORD shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones.
Jos 7:26 And they raised over him a great heap of stones unto this day. So the LORD turned from the fierceness of his anger. Wherefore the name of that place was called, The valley of Achor, unto this day.

Israel had to get rid of their sin problem Before they went in to conquer AI
Chapter 8
AI Conquered
Israel uses the art of deception to defeat AI. Some of Israel pretends to run away as if they have been beat. The men of AI pursue them but then AI is ambushed from behind and they burn down the city.
Jos 8:15 And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.
Jos 8:16 And all the people that were in Ai were called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.
Jos 8:17 And there was not a man left in Ai or Bethel, that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel.
Jos 8:18 And the LORD said unto Joshua, Stretch out the spear that is in thy hand toward Ai; for I will give it into thine hand. And Joshua stretched out the spear that he had in his hand toward the city.
Jos 8:19 And the ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand: and they entered into the city, and took it, and hasted and set the city on fire.
Jos 8:20 And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers.
Jos 8:21 And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and slew the men of Ai.
Chapter 9
Gibeonites Trick Israel
The Gibeonites are afraid of Israel because of all their victories. They are actually very close by but pretend to be from a far country. They make a league with Israel. Even though the LORD didn’t want them to make any treaties.
Chapter 10
Sun Stands Still, Amorite Kings Killed
Jos 10:5 Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and encamped before Gibeon, and made war against it.
This pictures the nations coming together against Jesus Christ
In Revelation 16:16 you have a prophecy of what happens at the second coming. The nations gather together against Jesus Christ.
Rev 16:16 And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.
THE SUN STANDS STILL. SCIENTISTS BELIEVE THERE IS A MISSING DAY
Jos 10:11 And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Bethhoron, that the LORD cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.
Jos 10:12 Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.
Jos 10:13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.
Jos 10:14 And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel.
Jos 10:15 And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.
Chapter 11
The Lord Puts It In The Heart Of The Nations To Fight Israel
Jos 11:19 There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, save the Hivites the inhabitants of Gibeon: all other they took in battle.
Jos 11:20 For it was of the LORD to harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle, that he might destroy them utterly, and that they might have no favour, but that he might destroy them, as the LORD commanded Moses.
Zep 3:8 Therefore wait ye upon me, saith the LORD, until the day that I rise up to the prey: for my determination is to gather the nations, that I may assemble the kingdoms, to pour upon them mine indignation, even all my fierce anger: for all the earth shall be devoured with the fire of my jealousy.
The LORD can put it into the heart of a person to go against his saints.
Chapter 12
List of Conquered Kings
Remember the victories God has given you and write them down.
Write down every time God gives you a victory and then give him the credit.
Chapter 13
Land Still To Be Possessed
There is always more work to be done, more people to save, more room to improve. You never sit down.
14-19 These chapters detail who gets which parts of the land that Israel has gone into possess. It also Shows that the LORD wants to give his people an inheritance.
Col 3:24 Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.
Chapter 14
Caleb’s Inheritance
Chapter 15
Allotment For Judah
Chapter 16-17
Allotment For Ephraim & Manasseh
Chapter 18
Allotment of Remaining Land
Chapter 19
Inheritance Of Tribes
Chapter 20
Cities Of Refuge
They made cities of refuge for a man to flee to of he killed someone by accident. If the man gets to the city of refuge than the slayer can’t kill him.
Jos 20:5 And if the avenger of blood pursue after him, then they shall not deliver the slayer up into his hand; because he smote his neighbour unwittingly, and hated him not beforetime.
Jesus Christ is our city of refuge. If you don’t get to Jesus Christ before it is too late than you meet him as “the avenger of blood” instead of as “the bloody saviour.”
Chapter 21
Cities For Levites
Chapter 22
Eastern Tribes Build An Altar
The End Of Joshua’s Life. Jesus Christ will
Help you “finish your course.”
Chapter 23
Joshua’s Charge To Israel’s Leaders
Chapter 24
Joshua’s Farewell Message.
Jos 24:15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
This is an incredible book. If you like things that are action packed than you would love to read the book of Joshua.
Joshua is a manly man’s man. Notice the men in the Bible who God uses arent sissy’s.
Joshua is a “man of war…”
1Ti 1:18 This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare;
2Ti 2:3 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.
2Ti 2:4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.
Joshua is an amazing illustration of the LORD Jesus Christ. The name Joshua actually even means Jesus.
If you notice in Acts 7:45 it replaces Joshuas name with Jesus. The Holy Spirits way of further confirming the picture
Act 7:45 Which also our fathers that came after brought in with Jesus into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drave out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David;
Notice in the first two verses how Joshua shows you the LORD Jesus Christ. Keep in mind that Moses shows you the law…
Where as Moses didn’t get them into the land, Joshua did…the same way Jesus takes you further than the LAW!
Joh 1:17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
The law shows you that your a sinner but it’s Jesus Christ that leads you into the promised land of a victorious Christian life.
The author of this book is Joshua and Samuel also writes a tad bit at the end after Joshua dies.
Historically this book shows us what happens when Israel Crosses Jordan.
Doctrinally it shows us Joshua as a picture of Jesus Christ at the 2nd coming. You’ll notice the battles remind you of when Jesus Christ comes back for war.
Practically for us this book shows us the warfare of the believer.
The book of Joshua is the militant side of Christianity which is missing today. We don’t have many warriors in the word. We don’t have many today who know how to use the word of God which is quick and powerful and sharper than any two edged sword…
While Joshua fought physical battles with physical weapons…we fight a spiritual battle with a spiritual weapon.
And as I said Joshua replaces Moses as Jesus replaces the law.
In chapters 1-5 you have israel going into the land
In chapters 6-12 you have the battles listed for keeping the land.
Chapters 13-24 are primarily about the colonization of the land.
Now with that quick outline…let’s go through this book and look at some outstanding stories and truths.
In the first chapter you have the commission and command of Joshua.
The LORD says no one shall be able to stand before Joshua all the days of his life.
Joshua was already a tough character…imagine God saying such a thing to a person who is already a mighty man in the LORD. He wouldn’t fear any man but God.
We also see that Joshua is guided by a book. Like we should be.
Jos 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
All your rules, comfort, guidance, help, authority is laid out for you in the King James Bible.
Going into chapter 2 you are introduced to a woman named Rahab the Harlot who lives in Jericho. Since she hid Israel’s spies…she is told by them to let down a scarlet thread from her window…so that when Israel comes through to take over Jericho…everyone in her house would be spared.
You see this scarlet thread shows us the blood of the LORD Jesus Christ. As long as we have the blood of Jesus Christ than we are safe from the wrath of God.
Then in chapter 3 you the crossing of Jordan. This is an incredible miracle. Just as amazing as Moses parting the Red Sea. Nothing is impossible with God. If he can put israel through large bodies of water on dry ground than he can help you with the minor things of your everyday life.
In chapter 5 you have the new generation of Israel that were able to go into the land and they are circumcised. So Israel is circumcised a second time…this pictures something in our salvation. When you get saved the LORD circumcises your flesh from your soul. That’s the first circumcision. And the second one has to do with the mortification of the flesh.
Col 3:5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
So if you do this than you will be separate and have your flesh under subjection.
Than in chapter 6 you have the seven priests bearing seven trumpets of rams horns. This pictures the 7 trumpets in the tribulation.
And something to note is that Joshua is the sixth book of the Bible. And here we are in chapter 6…now look at verse 5
Jos 6:5 And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when ye hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall ascend up every man straight before him.
So here you have people that are going to hear a trumpet and then ascend up when they hear the trumpet…and this is in here before the 6th verse. So here we are in Joshua, sixth book of the Bible, in chapter 6, before the 6th verse. So you have it mentioning people ascending up at the sound of a trumpet …before the 666. And then look what happens in verse 6, you have 7 trumpets just like the tribulation time period.
Jos 6:6 And Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said unto them, Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark of the LORD.
So just here in the book of Joshua you have an outline for the rapture taking place before the mark of the beast and seven trumpets. And we don’t base our doctrine off that…we base it off other clear things in the Bible…but that is just neat.
In chapter 7 Israel is defeated at AI because someone in the camp was sinning. Showing how sin will cause you to lose the victory in your Christian life. Achin sinned when he took the goodly Babyloniash garment. He saw it, he covered it and he took it. He ends up stoned and burned. That’s why they say if you play with sin than your going to get burned.
In chapter 8 you have Israel coming back and defeating AI…showing just because a certain giant or sin or obstacle defeated you to begin with…this doesn’t mean you can’t go back up and get the victory. It’s a great story how Joshua and israel has deception to defeat AI.
Jos 8:13 And when they had set the people, even all the host that was on the north of the city, and their liers in wait on the west of the city, Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.
Jos 8:14 And it came to pass, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he wist not that there were liers in ambush against him behind the city.
Then in chapter 9…read this…
Jos 9:1 And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof;
Jos 9:2 That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.
You know what happens at the second coming? The nations gather together against their enemy…the lord Jesus Christ.
Rev 16:14 For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.
Rev 16:15 Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.
Rev 16:16 And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.
Men will gather together even though they are enemies…just for the reason that they hate Jesus Christ.
Then in chapter 9 you also have the part where the Gibeonites deceive Israel. They pretend to be from a far off place when they are just their neighbor and get Joshua and Israel to make a covenant with them…even though Israel wasn’t suppose to …
This goes to show that even a GOOD MAN can be deceived and not just lost people. Why do you think Paul says over and over again to the church the phrase “BE NOT DECEIVED.”
In chapter 10 you have the great miracle of the sun standing still…not only this but the LORD also drops hailstones on the enemies of Israel.
This is what it’s going to be like at the second coming. The lord will fight for Israel.
Rom 11:26 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:
Rom 11:27 For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.
In chapter 11 we read more about Israel’s dominance over the enemy because of the LORDS help.
Jos 11:1 And it came to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor had heard those things, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph,
Jos 11:2 And to the kings that were on the north of the mountains, and of the plains south of Chinneroth, and in the valley, and in the borders of Dor on the west,
Jos 11:3 And to the Canaanite on the east and on the west, and to the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite in the mountains, and to the Hivite under Hermon in the land of Mizpeh.
Jos 11:4 And they went out, they and all their hosts with them, much people, even as the sand that is upon the sea shore in multitude, with horses and chariots very many.
Jos 11:5 And when all these kings were met together, they came and pitched together at the waters of Merom, to fight against Israel
Jos 11:18 Joshua made war a long time with all those kings.
Jos 11:19 There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, save the Hivites the inhabitants of Gibeon: all other they took in battle.
I just love reading about a dominant group of soldiers. That is a common plot in movies. Underdog stories are so of the most common movie plots. And Israel was going against bigger, mightier men who out numbered them.
In chapter number 12 you have a list of all the soldiers who were defeated by Moses and Joshua. I think that is just interesting. They have this saying that “if you want to be the best than you have to beat the best.” And Israel beat everybody. If Israel had a basketball team and the opposing team had Michael Jordan at shooting Guard, Magic Johnson at point guard, Lebron James at small forward, Tim Duncan at Power Forward, Shaq at center…all in their prime with Kobe, Larry Bird, And wilt chamberlain coming off the bench than Israel would beat them. Because it is the LORD that was helping them win.
Rom 8:31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?
In chapter 13 and 14 it talks about Land still to be conquered and inheritance…
Chapters 15-19 is the consignment of land to the 12 tribes.
Chapter 20 goes into the cities of refuge.
Chapter 21 talks about cities given to the Levite’s.
In chapters 23 and 24 you have Joshuas last messages to Israel and his death.
