Bible Highlight Reel (Genesis 12-16)

The main character is now Abram. (Abraham). The rest of the Old Testament will be about the seed of this man.

Abraham (Abram) comes from the line of Shem and Eber.

Gen 11:29  And Abram and Nahor took them wives: the name of Abram’s wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor’s wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah.

Gen 11:30  But Sarai was barren; she had no child.

Sarai is one of the seven women in the Bible who has a miracle birth. All these miracle births picture the miracle of the birth of Jesus Christ in the flesh.

  1. Isaac – born to Abraham and Sarah. They were both old and Sarai was barren.
  2. Jacob – born to Isaac and Rebekah. She was also barren.
  3. Joseph – Born to Jacob and Rachel after she had been barren.
  4. Samson – born to Manoah and his wife.
  5. Samuel – born to Elkanah and Hannah who had been barren.
  6. John the Baptist – Born to Zechariah and Elizabeth who were very old and childless.
  7. Jesus Christ – Born of Mary who was a virgin and with child by the Holy Ghost.

Genesis 12

God’s Promise To Abraham.

Gen 12:1  Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee:

Gen 12:2  And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:

Abram and Sarai are going to have a miracle birth. From them will comes the nation of Israel. Abram is the first jew.

Gen 12:3  And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

The nations that are good to Israel will be blessed and the ones who aren’t will be cursed.

Abram lies about his wife and says Sarai is his sister.

This story could picture Jesus Christ and his bride. (Which is us). Sometimes the bride doesn’t show the world (Egypt) who their husband is.

He is afraid that the men in Egypt will kill him for his wife. It wouldn’t hurt for Abram to be more jealous over his wife.

Jealousy isn’t a bad thing when it comes to your spouse.

2Co 11:2  For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.

If you have read Genesis than you know that Abraham did something else that he really wasn’t supposed to do. He took Lot with him.

They end up having to separate in chapter 13..

Genesis 13

Abram & Lot Separate. Lot goes to Sodom

Gen 13:10  And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.

Gen 13:11  Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other.

Gen 13:12  Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom.

He put his tent in the wrong place. You can go somewhere and be a light to the people, you just don’t want to pitch your tent there.

You may even live in a wicked place like Las Vegas or San Francisco…but you don’t have to pitch your tent there and get involved.

You’re going to be rubbing shoulders with the wicked but you don’t have to become one of them to win them.

1Co 5:9  I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators:

1Co 5:10  Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world.

Lot got a little too involved. So much involved that his sons in law think he is a joke when he tries to warn them.

Gen 13:13  But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly. (Chapter 13, verse 13, 13 words)

Gen 14:4  Twelve years they served Chedorlaomer, and in the thirteenth year they rebelled.

The first verse in the Bible that doesn’t say god is Genesis 1:13.

Throughout the Bible you see God getting angry over sodomites. In Genesis 19 you’ll see him rain fire and brimstone on Sodom and Gomorrah.

Lev 18:22  Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.

Lev 20:13  If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

Rom 1:26  For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

Rom 1:27  And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

To pretend that God isn’t against homosexuality is to simply deny the Bible and believe in a god that isn’t the God of the Bible.

The LORD speaks to Abram again AFTER he separates from LOT! Maybe something to that!

Gen 13:14  And the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward:

Gen 13:15  For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.

Gen 13:16  And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered.

God reminds Abraham of his promise to him. Sometimes when your with someone your not supposed to be with they can cause you to forget the promises!

Lot separated from Abram but Lot is still proving to be more trouble than he is worth.

Genesis 14

Abram Has To Rescue Lot

Gen 14:14  And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his trained servants, born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them unto Dan.

Gen 14:15  And he divided himself against them, he and his servants, by night, and smote them, and pursued them unto Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus.

Abram is a lot tougher than most people realize. He has trained servants that fight when he needs them.

What he did concerning his wife and those Egyptians made him look soft, but a man is bold when he is right with the LORD.

With these 318 he will go and rescue Lot and defeat five armies. Sounds like something from a movie.

Abraham is visited by Melchizedek & the king of Sodom after the victory.

This is a picture of how the Lord’s crowd will approach you but the devil’s crowd will also want to fellowship because they are attracted to your power. (Like the devil possessed man ran and worshipped Jesus)

Gen 14:18  And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.

Melchizedek is a picture of the LORD JESUS, notice he brings forth “bread and wine”, just like the LORD.

He is a priest just like the LORD.

Gen 14:19  And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:

A theory is that Melchizedek is Shem, who even though he was one of Noah’s sons, actually out lives Abraham.

This is Melchizedek passing down the crown of the kingdom of heaven down to Abram.

Gen 14:20  And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.

It wasn’t that Abram and his 318 trained servants were so well trained. It is that the LORD himself delivered his enemies into his hand.

Now Abram meets another king…but this one is a wicked king.

Gen 14:21  And the king of Sodom said unto Abram, Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself.

Sodomites want PEOPLE because they can’t reproduce they can only recruit.  They are interested in your children.

Gen 14:22  And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth,

Gen 14:23  That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich:

Abram doesn’t want to take anything from the king of Sodom. He doesn’t need anything the wicked world can give him.

Genesis 15

God appears to Abram in a vision and tells him he’s going to have a child of his own bowels that will be his heir.

Gen 15:1  After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.

Back before there was a written word of God the LORD appeared to men in dreams and visions.

Gen 15:5  And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.

Gen 15:6  And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.

Abram got imputed righteousness because he believed God about his seed.

When you start doubting God’s promises, go out at night, and look up, if God can make all that and keep it from falling on you than he can easily get you to heaven.

Rom 4:1  What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found?

Rom 4:2  For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God.

Rom 4:3  For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.

Rom 4:4  Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.

Rom 4:5  But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

Rom 4:9  Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.

Rom 4:10  How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.

Rom 4:11  And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:

Rom 4:12  And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.

Rom 4:13  For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

Rom 4:14  For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect:

Rom 4:15  Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.

Rom 4:16  Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,

Rom 4:17  (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.

Rom 4:18  Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.

Rom 4:19  And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara’s womb:

Rom 4:20  He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;

Rom 4:21  And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.

Rom 4:22  And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.

Rom 4:23  Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him;

Rom 4:24  But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;

Rom 4:25  Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

God’s Covenant With Abraham

Gen 15:18  In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:

This is one of the reasons the devil hates the Jews. They get the land that used to be his. And the promised seed comes from Abraham as well. The seed that was promised to bruise his head in Genesis 3:15.

Abram believes the LORD about his seed but the problem is that Abram is impatient. God isn’t in a hurry but for some reason Abram is.

Genesis 16

Abram & Sarai fail in waiting on the LORD

Abram was told that he would have a child with Sarai and from that child would come innumerable children.

Sarai gets impatient and wants Abram to have a child by Hagar , her Egyptian servant. From this relationship comes the WILD MAN, Ishmael! And from him would come innumerable enemies of God’s people.

Gen 16:12  And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.

That’s the price of not waiting on the LORD.
