LEVITICUS OVERVIEW NOTES

THEME – The Priesthood and our life of Holiness to the LORD. The word “holy” occurs 94x.

Rev 1:6  And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

1Pe 2:9  But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

HISTORICALLY – Laws given to Israel by God and administered by the Levites. (Aaron and his sons)

DEVOTIONALLY – Our walk with the LORD.

DOCTRINALLY – God’s message to Israel during the tribulation.

AUTHOR – Moses (John 7:22, Lev 12:3)

27 chapters, 859 verses, 24546 words.

Differences Between Then and now.

  • Leviticus gives instructions to Israel on how to get to God to worship.

They had a physical tabernacle or temple to approach God, today we are the temple.

In the Old Testament God had a temple for his people and now he has his people for a temple.

1Co 6:19  What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

1Co 6:20  For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

They had to shed the blood of animals multiple times. Jesus Christ died for our sins ONCE.

Heb 10:4  For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.

Heb 7:27  Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.

They had to have priests to go into the tabernacle and sacrifice for them. Jesus Christ is our high priest, sacrifice, and mediator.

1Ti 2:5  For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

1-7 LAW OF OFFERINGS

  • (1) Burnt Offering

Eph 5:2  And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.

Heb 9:14  How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Creatures Accepted For Sacrifice

  • Bullock or Ox – Patient enduring servant. Obedient to death

1Co 9:9  For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen?

Heb 12:2  Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Php 2:8  And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

  • Sheep Or Lambs –

Isa 53:7  He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth

Act 8:32  The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth:

Act 8:33  In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.

  • Goat – the goat pictures a sinner.

Isa 53:12  Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Luk 23:33  And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.

  • Dove – Jesus Became poor. The poor sacrificed a turtle dove or pigeons

Luk 9:58  And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head

OFFERED OF A PERSONS OWN VOLUNTARY WILL

Lev 1:3  If his offering be a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without blemish: he shall offer it of his own voluntary will at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD.

  • (2) Meat Offering

Joh 6:27  Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.

  • (3) Peace Offering

Col 1:20  And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.

  • (4) Sin Offering

2Co 5:21  For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

  • (5) Trespass offering

Col 2:13  And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

Col 2:14  Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

  • (6) Law Of The Trespass Offering

A lot of practical instruction for today.

Lev 6:4  Then it shall be, because he hath sinned, and is guilty, that he shall restore that which he took violently away, or the thing which he hath deceitfully gotten, or that which was delivered him to keep, or the lost thing which he found,

Lev 6:5  Or all that about which he hath sworn falsely; he shall even restore it in the principal, and shall add the fifth part more thereto, and give it unto him to whom it appertaineth, in the day of his trespass offering.

Lev 6:6  And he shall bring his trespass offering unto the LORD, a ram without blemish out of the flock, with thy estimation, for a trespass offering, unto the priest:

Lev 6:7  And the priest shall make an atonement for him before the LORD: and it shall be forgiven him for any thing of all that he hath done in trespassing therein.

  • (7) Law Of trespass offering.

Lev 7:14  And of it he shall offer one out of the whole oblation for an heave offering unto the LORD, and it shall be the priest’s that sprinkleth the blood of the peace offerings.

The heave offerings have to do with the movement of the sacrifice. It is LIFTED UP.

Joh 3:14  And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:

  • (8) Aaron & His Sons anointed as Priests

Aaron and his sons picture Jesus Christ and believers.

  • The sons are related by birth. (We are by the new birth)
  • They are washed. We are washed.

Lev 8:6  And Moses brought Aaron and his sons, and washed them with water.

Eph 5:25  Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

Eph 5:26  That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

We are both girt about with something.

Lev 8:7  And he put upon him the coat, and girded him with the girdle, and clothed him with the robe, and put the ephod upon him, and he girded him with the curious girdle of the ephod, and bound it unto him therewith.

Lev 8:8  And he put the breastplate upon him: also he put in the breastplate the Urim and the Thummim.

Eph 6:14  Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

The “Urim and Thummim” was the only accepted form of Divination. This is how they received direct answers from God.

1Sa 28:6  And when Saul enquired of the LORD, the LORD answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets.

They have the blood applied to them, as do we.

Lev 8:24  And he brought Aaron’s sons, and Moses put of the blood upon the tip of their right ear, and upon the thumbs of their right hands, and upon the great toes of their right feet: and Moses sprinkled the blood upon the altar round about.

Col 1:14  In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

They are anointed, we are also

Lev 8:30  And Moses took of the anointing oil, and of the blood which was upon the altar, and sprinkled it upon Aaron, and upon his garments, and upon his sons, and upon his sons’ garments with him; and sanctified Aaron, and his garments, and his sons, and his sons’ garments with him

2Co 1:21  Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God;

Chapter 9

The offerings Of Aaron.

Lev 9:8  Aaron therefore went unto the altar, and slew the calf of the sin offering, which was for himself.

Jesus didn’t have to make an offering for himself

Heb 7:26  For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;

Heb 7:27  Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.

Chapter 10

Nadab and Abihu Offer Strange Fire.

The LORD recognizes the fake.

Lev 10:1  And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not.

Lev 10:2  And there went out fire from the LORD, and devoured them, and they died before the LORD.

1Ti 1:5  Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:

Chapter 11

Dietary Laws For Israel

Lev 11:2  Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, These are the beasts which ye shall eat among all the beasts that are on the earth.

Lev 11:3  Whatsoever parteth the hoof, and is clovenfooted, and cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that shall ye eat.

This pictures how as a Christian you need to TALK THE TALK AND WALK THE WALK…

  • Part the hoof and chew the cud…
  • Not just chew the cud and part not the hoof…

Jas 1:22  But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

THE NEW TESTAMENT DOESNT COMMAND US TO ABSTAIN FROM MEATS

1Ti 4:3  Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.

1Ti 4:4  For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:

Act 10:9  On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour:

Act 10:10  And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance,

Act 10:11  And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth:

Act 10:12  Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.

Act 10:13  And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.

Act 10:14  But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.

Act 10:15  And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.

Col 2:16  Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:

Lev 11:13  And these are they which ye shall have in abomination among the fowls; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, and the ossifrage, and the ospray,

Lev 11:14  And the vulture, and the kite after his kind;

Lev 11:15  Every raven after his kind;

Lev 11:16  And the owl, and the night hawk, and the cuckow, and the hawk after his kind,

Lev 11:17  And the little owl, and the cormorant, and the great owl,

Lev 11:18  And the swan, and the pelican, and the gier eagle,

Lev 11:19  And the stork, the heron after her kind, and the lapwing, and the bat.

The unclean birds picture unclean spirits.

Mar 4:4  And it came to pass, as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and the fowls of the air came and devoured it up.

Mar 4:15  And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts.

Rev 18:2  And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.

Chapter 12

PURIFICATION FOR UNCLEANNESS AT CHILD BIRTH

In chapter 12 it goes into “purification after child birth.” This reminds me of how once you are born into the family oF God you need to work on “cleaning your life up.”

Lev 12:8  And if she be not able to bring a lamb, then she shall bring two turtles, or two young pigeons; the one for the burnt offering, and the other for a sin offering: and the priest shall make an atonement for her, and she shall be clean.

This proves that Mary and Joseph were POOR

Luk 2:22  And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;

Luk 2:23  (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)

Luk 2:24  And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

2Co 8:9  For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.

Chapter 13

LEPROSY A picture of sin.

People living in sin can make you dirty

Lev 13:2  When a man shall have in the skin of his flesh a rising, a scab, or bright spot, and it be in the skin of his flesh like the plague of leprosy; then he shall be brought unto Aaron the priest, or unto one of his sons the priests:

This shows us how other people can make us dirty. As a born again believer you need to separate from the world…

2Co 6:17  Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,

1Co 15:33  Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.

Eph 5:11  And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them

Lev 13:47  The garment also that the plague of leprosy is in, whether it be a woollen garment, or a linen garment;

The tribulation epistle JUDE speaks of garments being spotted by the flesh.

Jud 1:23  And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.

The mark of the beast comes with a leprosy like plague from the LORD.

Rev 16:2  And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image.

Chapter 14

LAW OF CLEANSING LEPROSY AND LEPROSY IN THE HOUSE

Leprosy is like SIN. It gets in your clothes and it gets IN YOUR HOUSE. It spreads like a plague and gets worse with time.

So to keep yourself clean, make sure you clean house, and get rid of sinful things in your house.

Chapter 15

Uncleanness in Marriage relationships. Cleansing in private life

Make sure God is in your marriage. Keeping your marriage holy is part of holy and clean living.

Chapter 16

Aarons activities in the tabernacle on the day of atonement and the scapegoat

Lev 16:22  And the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities unto a land not inhabited: and he shall let go the goat in the wilderness.

2Co 5:21  For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Chapter 17

The accepted place of sacrifices and rules against eating blood

Ruled against throughout the Bible.

Lev 17:10  And whatsoever man there be of the house of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, that eateth any manner of blood; I will even set my face against that soul that eateth blood, and will cut him off from among his people.

Gen 9:4  But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.

Gen 9:5  And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother will I require the life of man.

Gen 9:6  Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.

Act 15:20  But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and fromthings strangled, and from blood.

Chapter 18

Sexual Sins

Lev 18:6  None of you shall approach to any that is near of kin to him, to uncover their nakedness: I am the LORD.

Lev 18:7  The nakedness of thy father, or the nakedness of thy mother, shalt thou not uncover: she is thy mother; thou shalt not uncover her nakedness.

Lev 18:20  Moreover thou shalt not lie carnally with thy neighbour’s wife, to defile thyself with her.

Lev 18:22  Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.

Lev 18:23  Neither shalt thou lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith: neither shall any woman stand before a beast to lie down thereto: it is confusion.

Chapter 19

Ethical and moral regulations. OT sermon on the mount

Lev 19:2  Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy: for I the LORD your God am holy.

Lev 19:3  Ye shall fear every man his mother, and his father, and keep my sabbaths: I am the LORD your God.

Lev 19:4  Turn ye not unto idols, nor make to yourselves molten gods: I am the LORD your God.

Lev 19:11  Ye shall not steal, neither deal falsely, neither lie one to another.

Lev 19:12  And ye shall not swear by my name falsely, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD.

Lev 19:13  Thou shalt not defraud thy neighbour, neither rob him: the wages of him that is hired shall not abide with thee all night until the morning.

Lev 19:16  Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people: neither shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbour: I am the LORD.

Lev 19:17  Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him.

Lev 19:18  Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD.

Why Jesus Christ had long hair…

Lev 19:27  Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard.

1Co 11:14  Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?

Chapter 20

Warning Against Idolatry, Black Magic, witchcraft, sacrificing to devils, Judgments on fornication

Lev 20:2  Again, thou shalt say to the children of Israel, Whosoever he be of the children of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn in Israel, that giveth any of his seed unto Molech; he shall surely be put to death: the people of the land shall stone him with stones.

Moloch

Act 7:43  Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.

Milchim,

1Ki 11:5  For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.

Malcham

Zep 1:5  And them that worship the host of heaven upon the housetops; and them that worship and that swear by the LORD, and that swear by Malcham;

Chapter 21

Proper Conduct For Levitical Priests. Physical Disqualifications for OT Priests.

The qualifications show us how Jesus Christ is “without blemish” because he is typified by Aaron. They also show us our standing when we get in Jesus Christ which is “without blemish”

This pictures how the LORD our high priest is WITHOUT SIn and without blemish. So when we believe on him we are without sin and without blemish

Lev 21:7  They shall not take a wife that is a whore, or profane; neither shall they take a woman put away from her husband: for he is holy unto his God.

A Christian shouldn’t disobey what Paul said and yoke himself with unbelievers unbelieving wife…

Lev 21:18  For whatsoever man he be that hath a blemish, he shall not approach: a blind man, or a lame, or he that hath a flat nose, or any thing superfluous,

Lev 21:19  Or a man that is brokenfooted, or brokenhanded,

Lev 21:20  Or crookbackt, or a dwarf, or that hath a blemish in his eye, or be scurvy, or scabbed, or hath his stones broken;

Lev 21:21  No man that hath a blemish of the seed of Aaron the priest shall come nigh to offer the offerings of the LORD made by fire: he hath a blemish; he shall not come nigh to offer the bread of his God.

Chapter 22

Extreme Separation Of Aaron and his sons

Chapter 23

Lev 23:5  In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the LORD’S passover.

Unleavened Bread – pictures the holy word of God and the holy walk.

2Co 5:21  For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Lev 23:6  And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the LORD: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread.

1Co 15:20  But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.

Lev 23:9  And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

Feast Of Weeks – (2nd month)

Pentecost – (3rd month)

Trumpets -relation to the rapture and regathering of Israel

1Th 4:16  For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

1Co 15:51  Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,

1Co 15:52  In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

Day Of Atonement – Israel’s annual cleansing from sin. Jesus became our sin offering

Lev 23:26  And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

Lev 23:27  Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD.

Lev 23:28  And ye shall do no work in that same day: for it is a day of atonement, to make an atonement for you before the LORD your God.

Lev 23:29  For whatsoever soul it be that shall not be afflicted in that same day, he shall be cut off from among his people.

2Co 5:21  For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

WAVE OFFERING – FIRSTFRUITS

1Co 15:23  But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming.

Chapter 24

“The ETERNAL FLAME.”Oil For The Light.

Lev 24:2  Command the children of Israel, that they bring unto thee pure oil olive beaten for the light, to cause the lamps to burn continually.

This should remind you in your Christian life if you are a preacher or teacher…don’t let the fire burn out. Keep reading and learning the Bible to pass It along to other Christians. Too many have lost interest in the book. Their sermons are shallow. Their congregations lack so much knowledge of the word because they are failing. They are letting the lamp burn out.

Capital Punishment For Murder

Lev 24:21  And he that killeth a beast, he shall restore it: and he that killeth a man, he shall be put to death.

Gen 9:6  Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.

Num 35:31  Moreover ye shall take no satisfaction for the life of a murderer, which is guilty of death: but he shall be surely put to death.

Rom 13:4  For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.

Chapter 25

One Year Rest Every Seven Years. The jubilee year

Lev 25:10  And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family.

Chapter 26

Conditional Nature Of The Mosaic Law, Sanctification

Chapter 27

Laws About Vows

Voluntary promises made to God

Ecc 5:5  Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.
